It was founded by the West Bengal government as a educating and affiliating University of Burdwan on 15 June 1960 with 6 graduate departments and 30 undergraduate colleges spread over 5 districts that arrive under the jurisdiction of the University of Burdwan.

University of Burdwan Institute of Technology (UIT) is a specialized engineering college below the University of Burdwan, and presently connotes the faculty of engineering that was at National Institute of Technology, Durgapur since its beginning. This college was inaugurated in 2001 by the then chief minister of West Bengal Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. UIT is authorised by the government of West Bengal and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
